“Orange and White Cat”

“Orange and White Cat” is a painting inspired by my love of cats and the seven felines who currently own my house! This particular cat turned out looking a lot like one of our dearly departed pets named Spanky. He was a beautiful, big long-haired cat with a laid back personality.

“Canadian Warbler”

Canadian Warbler on easel

“Canadian Warbler” is an original acrylic painting on a miniature 2.5 x 2.5 inch stretched canvas. The canvas is backed with a magnet, so the painting can be displayed either on an easel or on a metal surface.

I love working with these small canvases. They lend themselves so well to subjects such as small birds. They are also popular with customers. I have a lot of fun with them and plan to do more, maybe with different subjects.

“Gathering Storm”

“Gathering Storm” was an interesting journey. I hadn’t created anything since “The Promise of Rain”. I was experiencing the return of my depression and as a result, found myself unmotivated to do much of anything, including paint.

I finally sat down after a few weeks to try painting again. After several failed attempts, two half started canvases and much frustration, I stepped back for a few days to regroup. I decided I was trying too hard to push myself into creating. I needed to relax and just let it happen.

Grabbing one of the half painted canvas, I painted over everything with white and started over. The first thing I did was paint a blue sky while my brain mulled over the possibilities. Deciding that I wanted an ocean, that was the next addition. Moving on to the clouds, I found myself creating dark skies instead of sunny. It felt right, so I worked on purple and blue storm clouds with a full moon shining on the horizon, as if the storm was moving in. Adding purples to the surface of the blue water reflected the coming darkness. I painted in wisps of cloud over the moonlit horizon and moonlight reflections on the water.

Not wanting to add a sandy beach to the scene, I decided to do a rocky shore instead. Now I had not tackled rocks yet except on an alien landscape in “Red Planet”. So, I took my time with the rocks, trying to get the angle of the light and shadows right using gray and purple tones. It took awhile, but I’m pleased with the result.

"The Promise of Rain"

“The Promise of Rain” is the first painting I have produced in a few months. It depicts a lonely farm in the middle of  a parched prairie. The house looks deserted. The lone tree is gnarled and dead. The old windmill stands silent and still. Overhead, dark clouds are gathering with the promise of rain.

They say that an artist puts their heart on canvas. I can see that in this painting. The parched landscape brings thoughts of hopelessness and hardship. My life has been filled with these things for quite awhile, stealing away my desire to go on. But recently things have shifted from hopelessness towards much needed help and relief. The rain clouds moving in over the landscape in the painting are a promise of relief and a sign of hope.

ORIGINAL NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR SALE.

"Rainbow's End"

“Rainbow’s End” is a fun, colorful fantasy landscape. I wanted to do a painting with a rainbow as the subject. After painting the sky, I thought about what someone might find at the end of a magical rainbow. This led me to gold and leprechauns, which then led me to thoughts of Ireland. And thinking about Ireland and all the beautiful green landscapes brought me to the idea of a mountain lake with a rainbow sky reflection. I love this one!
