“Moonrise”

“Moonrise” is a smaller version of a previous painting, “Stargazing on Earth 2.0”.

Commission. Acrylic painting on 16 x 20 inch stretched canvas.

“Sunset Point”

“Sunset Point” comes from my ongoing love affair with sunsets. No two sunsets are ever alike. The soft, warm light touches everything, creating a sense of peacefulness. The surface of the water picks up the brilliant colors and reflects them back in a sparking light show. Whether it be on an ocean, lake or pond the effect is magical. So please stop and watch a sunset once in awhile.

Acrylic painting on 16 x 20 inch stretched canvas. Unframed. Signed by the artist. SOLD.

"The Promise of Rain"

“The Promise of Rain” is the first painting I have produced in a few months. It depicts a lonely farm in the middle of  a parched prairie. The house looks deserted. The lone tree is gnarled and dead. The old windmill stands silent and still. Overhead, dark clouds are gathering with the promise of rain.

They say that an artist puts their heart on canvas. I can see that in this painting. The parched landscape brings thoughts of hopelessness and hardship. My life has been filled with these things for quite awhile, stealing away my desire to go on. But recently things have shifted from hopelessness towards much needed help and relief. The rain clouds moving in over the landscape in the painting are a promise of relief and a sign of hope.

ORIGINAL NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR SALE.

"Moon Flowers"

“Moon Flowers” is a little different than my usual style, but it was fun to create. You can imagine the moon shining down and opening the different blooms. It has a familiar, yet slightly alien look. It could be on any planet with a moon like ours. A colorful garden blooming in the moonlight.

I started using an early painting I created as a base. The earlier painting was pretty but plain. It was a simple ocean view with only two main colors, blue and purple, and straight lines for the land/sea divide and horizon. I was unhappy with it and so I made the decision to paint over it.

My idea was for a night sky scene, so I started by painting black over the sky and ocean, leaving the purple grass. I then blended purple and blue over the black sky, giving it a texture more like a night sky.

The inspiration for the alien garden came next, so I used bright greens, blues, yellow and pink to layer in the plants. I gave the plants some unusual shapes against the night sky and left the purple grass. This turned out well, but it needed something. The bright full moon sets off the dark night sky and completes the painting.

"Red Planet"

With “Red Planet”, I started out to paint a Mars landscape. But as I got further into the painting, I found myself not liking the muted red and brown color scheme that was happening. My planet needed some brighter colors. So I began opening up my palette to more vibrant reds and oranges. The image started coming alive, and I had no trouble completing the piece. The desert landscape with a hint of civilization past adds mystery to my version of the Red Planet.

“Red Planet” is an original acrylic painting on stretched canvas. Measures 20 x 16 inches. Unframed. Signed by the artist. Original painting is sold.

"Moonrise on Neptune III"

Three moons rise up from the horizon of an alien ocean into a cloudy purple sky. On the shore sits a large city, a testament to the ancient civilization that resides on the edge of the universe.

This painting rose up in my imagination after painting over an existing piece I was unhappy with. The color of the ocean was already mostly in place from the previous image. I painted white, then a purple gradation, over some of the details from the original picture. This created a series of shadow shapes under the new paint layer. I saw the current image in the shadows and just followed my imagination. This is the first time I have added structures to my landscape. I plan to experiment further as I create more new paintings.

“Moonrise on Neptune III” is an original acrylic painting measuring 12 x 24 inches on stretched canvas.

Original painting sold.

"Evening Reflections"

It has taken me a several weeks to write a new post, and I apologize. A combination of life chaos and illness has put me behind both in painting and writing. This new painting, finished just yesterday, is called “Evening Reflections”. The inspiration for this is a scene I like to visualize when I’m trying to unwind and relax to sleep. I have always loved mountain sunsets. I didn’t plan to paint this, but the sky took shape first and then the rest was just laying down the image in my head on the canvas. I find it this painting makes me happy inside and I can just spend time enjoying the sunset. I hope other viewers will also find it as pleasing.

This painting is done in acrylics on a 20 inch x 24 inch stretched canvas.

“Calm Before the Storm”

“Calm Before the Storm” is an original 16×20 inch acrylic painting on stretched canvas. This painting could actually be a nice companion piece to “Moonlight on the Bay”. The inspiration for this image was a recent series of events in my life. My family went through a very stressful period with an elderly family member as caregivers. When this family member was admitted to a rehab facility, there was a change in the stress level and things calmed down. However, I feel like I’m always waiting for the next storm to start.

I painted the calm, blue moonlit bay as an expression of feeling a brief calm in my life. I was able to relax a little a stop to paint. It also expresses a lift in spirits and happiness. The dark storm clouds looming overhead signify the yet unknown but anticipated storm that will break the calm.  The goal is to appreciate the beauty of the calm and try not to stress over things that haven’t happened yet.
