“Island Hideaway”

During this past winter, as we stayed home and social distanced because of COVID, I think a lot of us daydreamed about a vacation to some remote tropical island accessable only by boat. Sunny beaches, ocean breezes and the sound of the waves gently rolling into shore. A few small huts scattered around for sleeping under the palms. Sounds like a heavenly getaway!

“Beach Chair Sunset”

“Beach Chair Sunset” is a small painting of showing a lone beach chair facing a gorgeous tropical beach sunset. During this time of COVID-19, stress and social distancing, I think a lot of us are finding refuge in the occasional daydream. This is my favorite daydream. Sitting on a peaceful tropical beach, contemplating the shifting colors of an amazing sunset, warm breezes on my face.

“Northern Bluebird”

“Northern Bluebird” is a pretty little painting of a bluebird perched on a snowy branch. It’s one of several tiny paintings I made in November of 2019 for an art sale. I must admit I had a ball painting this colorful little bird. And the miniature paintings were a success at the art sale!  I sold them with a small wooden easel to display them on. I plan to do more as part of my regular painting routine.

“Pink and Purple Abstract”

This abstract painting is a fun and pretty image with pink and purple color variations. There are combinations of bright and dark tones, along with layers and texturing. It’s interesting to look into it and decide what you see in the random pattern of colors. This would make a great accent piece.

“Directionless”

Directionless describes how I feel at the moment. While painting this canvas, I was dwelling on various things that have happened in my life recently. Most importantly was the death of a treasured family member. My mother-in-law passed away at 91 last month rather unexpectedly. She was a strong mother figure to me, and we had a great relationship over the thirty plus years I knew her. Her death has left me feeling lost somehow, my grief manifesting in a slew of emotions. So finally I reached for a half-started painting I had abandoned and began just laying down color over the image. No plan. No rhyme or reason. Just painting. The limited color palette of blues, greens and purples seemed to soothe me, as did the random brush strokes. It was directionless, hence the title of the painting was born. Completing this piece was very therapeutic for me, and I hope viewers will find a moment of peace in it’s image.

“Autumn Light”

“Autumn Light” was inspired by the anticipation of the beautiful colors of fall. I live in the Ozarks, and we have some of the most beautiful fall foliage around. People get out and just drive around looking the wide variety of colors produced by the different kinds of trees.  I wanted to give a representation in my painting of just how vibrant the colors can seem. The backyard setting came from memories of home when our trees would turn each fall. The last addition was the leaf pile and rake, because that job was always mine!

“Gathering Storm”

“Gathering Storm” was an interesting journey. I hadn’t created anything since “The Promise of Rain”. I was experiencing the return of my depression and as a result, found myself unmotivated to do much of anything, including paint.

I finally sat down after a few weeks to try painting again. After several failed attempts, two half started canvases and much frustration, I stepped back for a few days to regroup. I decided I was trying too hard to push myself into creating. I needed to relax and just let it happen.

Grabbing one of the half painted canvas, I painted over everything with white and started over. The first thing I did was paint a blue sky while my brain mulled over the possibilities. Deciding that I wanted an ocean, that was the next addition. Moving on to the clouds, I found myself creating dark skies instead of sunny. It felt right, so I worked on purple and blue storm clouds with a full moon shining on the horizon, as if the storm was moving in. Adding purples to the surface of the blue water reflected the coming darkness. I painted in wisps of cloud over the moonlit horizon and moonlight reflections on the water.

Not wanting to add a sandy beach to the scene, I decided to do a rocky shore instead. Now I had not tackled rocks yet except on an alien landscape in “Red Planet”. So, I took my time with the rocks, trying to get the angle of the light and shadows right using gray and purple tones. It took awhile, but I’m pleased with the result.

What is Patreon and Why it’s Important to Creators Like Me

I love art, and majored in art in college. But I didn’t pursue my art career then, choosing instead to work full-time, then to start a family. Life moved forward, sweeping me along until I realized that years had passed. I had to stop working due to a couple of health issues that put me on disability. My daughter turned seventeen and will graduate from high school next year. These things, combined with some other big challenges over the past year, have made it clear that now is a good time to do something positive for myself.

Last September, I decided to change the course of my life and finally pursue my dream of becoming a professional artist. With the full support of my family, I purchased painting supplies and started creating. I have not looked back since. I love painting. It gives me a creative outlet, relaxes the stress away and makes me happy.

As a professional artist, I would like to sell my paintings and prints of my art to the public. This requires that I keep creating on a regular basis and remain well stocked in art supplies, etc.  Art supplies can be expensive, and I am on a limited income. This is a challenge that I’m facing on a daily basis.

I decided to join Patreon. What is Patreon? It’s a website built for creators (artists, musicians, film makers, etc) to post information about themselves and their projects. Creators then look for “patrons” to pledge a monthly payment toward supporting their work and the expenses it may bring. Pledges, however small or large, help these creators continue to pay for supplies, pay bills, buy postage to mail purchases to clients, etc.  In return for their monthly pledge, the creator rewards patrons with things like access to looks at works in progress, chats with the artist and special patron only gift items.

Following are examples of my smaller patron levels and the rewards earned for pledges:

Pledge Level 1

"Evening Reflections"

It has taken me a several weeks to write a new post, and I apologize. A combination of life chaos and illness has put me behind both in painting and writing. This new painting, finished just yesterday, is called “Evening Reflections”. The inspiration for this is a scene I like to visualize when I’m trying to unwind and relax to sleep. I have always loved mountain sunsets. I didn’t plan to paint this, but the sky took shape first and then the rest was just laying down the image in my head on the canvas. I find it this painting makes me happy inside and I can just spend time enjoying the sunset. I hope other viewers will also find it as pleasing.

This painting is done in acrylics on a 20 inch x 24 inch stretched canvas.
